Each field has settings that control how it looks, how it behaves, and how it validates entries. This article shows how to open the field settings panel, what each setting does, and how to edit several fields at once.
Where field settings appear
Field settings open in the right panel, on the Field Settings tab, for the field you select. The panel groups settings into three tabs:
- General—the field's label, key, type-specific options, whether it's required, and hint text
- Behavior—visibility, state, and rules
- Appearance—the field's background color
A bar at the bottom of the panel lets you duplicate the field, or delete it.
You can change any setting yourself, or ask the AI Assistant to change it for you.
Open the settings for a field
- On the canvas, select the field you want to edit.
- The right panel opens to the Field Settings tab.
- Select the General, Behavior, or Appearance tab to find a setting.
Tip: You can also select the settings icon on the field to open the same panel.
General settings
The General tab holds a field's core settings:
| Setting | What it does |
| Field Label | The question or text shown for the field |
| Field Key | A unique identifier for the field, using letters, numbers, and underscores |
| Required Field | Requires an entry before a user can submit the form |
| Hint Text | Guidance shown while the field is empty |
The General tab also holds the settings unique to the field's type, such as the options for a list, the limits for a number, or the quality for a photo.
Behavior settings
The Behavior tab controls how a field appears and acts, grouped into visibility and state.
Visibility:
| Setting | What it does |
| Hide Field | Hides the field in the app |
| Hide Field Label | Hides the field's label in the app |
| Exclude From Reports | Keeps the field's value out of reports |
| Exclude Sync | Keeps the field's value out of reports and the submission data |
State:
| Setting | What it does |
| Enabled | Turn off to gray out the field and make it read-only in the app |
| Read Only | Shows the field's value without allowing edits |
| Memory Field (Persist Value) | Remembers the last submitted value and pre-populates it next time |
| Capture GPS Location | Records the GPS location when the field was last edited |
| Capture Timestamp | Records the date and time when the field was last edited |
Below the visibility and state settings, the Behavior tab has action buttons. Which ones appear depends on the field type and your plan type:
- Field Rules — set rules that apply to this field
- Enable Task Creation — let a user create a task from this field
- Add To Summary — include this field in the form summary
- AI Photo Insights — add AI analysis to photos on a Multi Photo field
Appearance settings
The Appearance tab has one setting: Background Color. Set a field's background color to Green, Blue, Yellow, or Red to flag it in the app, or leave it as None.
Tip: To change a field's color based on an entry, use a rule instead of a fixed color.
Settings vary by field type
Not every setting applies to every field type. Settings that don't apply are grayed out.
Rename a field
- On the canvas, select the pencil icon on the field.
- Enter a new name.
- Confirm to save the name.
Use quick settings icons
You can show shortcut icons on each field for common settings, such as required, GPS capture, timestamp, and field rules.
- In the bottom toolbar, select Settings.
- Turn on Show Quick Settings Icons.
- Select an icon on a field to toggle that setting.
Edit several fields at once
When you select more than one field, a bulk edit panel opens with its own tabs: General, Validation, Behavior, Data, and Styling.
- Select the checkbox on each field you want to change.
- In the canvas toolbar, select Bulk Edit.
- Change a setting, then select Apply Changes.
Note: A setting shows only when it applies to every selected field.
Tip: You can also ask the AI Assistant to change many fields at once, for example, Make all fields in this section required.
