Battery and Performance
Location breadcrumbs require the mobile app to access GPS in the background, which may have a small impact on device battery life. The 5-minute update interval is designed to minimize this impact.
The app must remain running (in the foreground or background) for location tracking to continue. If the app is fully closed, breadcrumb updates will stop.
Some Android devices may restrict background activity. If location updates appear inconsistent, check the device’s battery optimization settings and ensure the FastField app is allowed to run in the background.
Connectivity
Location tracking is designed to work even in areas with intermittent connectivity. If a user loses signal while checked in, location data will continue to be recorded locally and will sync once a connection is restored.
Devices without GPS (such as WiFi-only iPads) rely on WiFi for location data and cannot record location while offline. Check-in/check-out events and form activity will appear in the portal once the device reconnects.
Data usage from location updates is minimal. For the most reliable tracking, use GPS-enabled devices such as iPhones or most Android phones.
Privacy
Ensure your team is aware that location tracking is enabled and understands what data is being collected, such as GPS location updates while checked in.
Location data is only captured when a technician is checked in or the app is actively running. Access to this data is limited to admin and dispatcher roles.
Before enabling tracking features, consider consulting your legal or HR teams to ensure compliance with any applicable policies or regulations.
Map Organization
Keeping your map organized makes it easier to monitor and manage operations.
- Use different colors for each layer to distinguish them visually
- Choose clear, descriptive names (e.g., “HVAC Equipment” instead of “Layer 1”)
- Hide layers that are not currently needed
- Use pin styling rules to quickly identify asset status
Establishing a consistent naming and styling approach will help keep your map clear and easy to use as your setup grows.
